March Against Monsanto

"Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally."
-world health organization

GMOs are used in a huge amount of our foods today, and the scary part is that many people don't even know it. Big corporations will alter a food with GMOs to change certain qualities. Such as giving it a longer shelf life, a bigger size, brighter color, resistance to pests. Sounds nice right? well no! Eating these foods can have a horrible impact on your health, growing them can seriously danger our environment, and it is proven that animals and insects are dying off from eating these foods. We are messing with so many things beyond the food you see.

Other countries have banned the use of GMOs in food. Doesn't that say something?

Here is an example: Currently there is a big debate over GMO salmon, this salmon has been genetically modified to grow at a faster rate than they normally do. Normally salmon only grows in the spring, after genetic modifications they grow all year around, getting bigger at twice the rate. These fish can feed more people and make a company more money. However there is the environmental concern that if any of these fish escape into the wild they can destroy our already depleted salmon population. The long term health effects that we could run into are not even known yet.

Anyhow, I obviously feel very strongly about this topic. So today I got my butt up to the state house and i protested for this in the march against monstano. Monstanto is the the leading company creating GM seeds, and selling them to farms. They are the root of it all. A bill just passed, The Monsanto Protection Act that prevents the federal court from stopping the selling or planting of any GM seeds. eek! Why do they need a bill for that if they aren't doing anything wrong?

There was actually a big turn out for the protest considering it was raining all day, damn you New England! I had never done anything like this before so i wasn't sure what to expect. It was great to see so many people got together and voice their cares, and their concerns for our future. Over the last year Boston has absolutely amazed me, we have such a passionate community.

I think I've said this before in my posts but don't be afraid to have an opinion, speak your mind!
